Abstract

It presents public libraries as social, cultural and memory institutions that face as challenges the disconnection between the theoretical and practical dimensions and the lack of adherence and social resonance. With a view to the theoretical-practical disconnect, it presents a theoretical-methodological proposal for aligning the concepts of information practices with the community of practice method, applicable to the public library environment, as a strategy for strengthening these spaces, with a view to reducing the distance between these institutions and the community. To this end, an integrative of information practices and communities of practice. As a result, it presents a theoretical-methodological model that combines the triangulation method (theory, practice and socio-historical context) with the dimensions of the community of practices (domain, community and practice), both permeated by the informational practices that are constituted and propagated or contested in social interactions during routine and formal informational actions in these spaces. It concludes that there is potential in adopting communities of practice as a method for incovering information practices in public libraries.
