Abstract
To understand environmental education and sustainability, identifying environmental education projects in school libraries and analyzing how the librarian can contribute to the construction of a sustainable culture. Research of an applied nature with a qualitative approach. As this is an exploratory research of bibliographic character, records already published in the area of Librarianship, pedagogy and environmental education from reputable sources were used, such as: Scientific Electronic Library Online (Scielo), Reference Database of Articles in Journals in Information Science (BRAPCI), CAPES journals and, for greater coverage, Google Scholar was used. It was found that there is little debate about environmental education in school libraries, however some of them already act as catalysts for environmental awareness through projects. The role of the librarian in the process of building sustainable culture is to facilitate access to environmental information, using methods to make the school library a dynamic and attractive environment, seeking to give visibility to projects focused on environmental education that involve not only the school , but also the whole community around. It was concluded that the librarian contributes to the construction of sustainable culture, using the techniques of cultural restructuring, instrumental initiation and cultural action, exercising its social function, from the moment it provides the user with the possibility of personal growth and provides their rights and duties as a citizen, making them critical thinking beings.
