Abstract

This article aims to make and reveal a historical view of the ex-líbris since its appearance in Europe. Also known as a bookplate, it is defined as a little paper label, which is so antique as a book. This article brings out the importance of Albrecht Dürer, a German artist that standed out during the beginning of this art and which works became known due to their elegance, refinement and perfect aesthetic. It discourses about the types of ex-líbris, which are characterized by the different illustrations that they are made up and the techniques that are used the most in its elaboration. It also exposes some ex-líbris of famous personalities and explains about the appearance of this art in Brazil, its decadence and actual situation. It presents and analyzes the George Alexander Library's ex-líbris, from Mackenzie University, which motivate this research
