Abstract

Considers the assumption that is relevant to indicate, as early as possible, the universe of reading to children. Shows that the practice of reading is a part of human life and that is the condition to acquire, produce, organize, use and transmit knowledge. Considering these assumptions is to explore the difficulties related to the practice of encouraging reading in school libraries. It carries out a literature review and a theoretical debate. Identifies, analyzes and explores the habits of reading, the role of the school library and the mediation process that can stimulate the formation of children readers. Concludes that the school library is a teaching mechanism and essential mediator to encourage the habit of reading in schools, through the practice of reading activities, contributing to the cognitive development of the student
