Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the extension activities offered at the environment librarian and understand how broad is your field of work, which goes beyond the actions taken outside the institution, through mobile libraries, and includes those that are developed in own place of libraries. To develop this theme, were used as the object of study the activities developed in September 2013 in São Paulo city library system – Municipal System of Libraries of the São Paulo - (SMB-SP), through the services offered by 52 neighborhood libraries in the city, the 72 Bus-library, 13Grove reading, and 15 Reading Points. Considering the proposal of the third Manifesto IFLA/UNESCO and the four functions aimed at public libraries (Educational, Informational, Cultural and Recreational), we see that the extension is present in the social function of the library. It was found that there is a great variety of projects offered, demonstrating its eclectic character. Early in its development, the idea of extension hovered only in the transport of the collection and the promotion of reading, in modern times, adds several cultural areas and includes the institution of the action in promoting library extension, uniting the practices of cultural action
