Abstract

Since colonial Brazil, Brazilian public libraries contributed little to the democratization of access to information. In the information society, the role of the public library becomes vitally important in that it can become the large central disseminator of information, working mainly for reducing inequalities in Brazilian society. The study aims to highlight the role of the public library over time and their permanent harmony with social processes , as well as address information and communication everyday citizens current technologies and, finally , to characterize its performance and reality in Society information . For the development of this study, the methodology used was a basic research with exploratory objectively from a literature review qualitative, inductive approach. It was concluded that since he could not “be everything to everyone”, the public library can segment the market and offer products and services rationally structured according to the informational needs of the community.
