Abstract

The article discusses racism in the Brazilian context, from the perspective of basic and academic education, and in the role of teachers and librarians. It exposes the relevance of this issue in the field of education, librarianship and information science, which permeates the training and continuing education of its professionals to assist in the proposition of Education of Ethnic-Racial Relations. It presents national educational guidelines focused on ethnic-racial plurality, reflected in the state of Santa Catarina and its capital, Florianópolis. Reading, literature and the school library have connection with such guidelines. It records the need to create school libraries, make them more dynamic to meet the demands of teaching and learning, to encourage the desire to read, and to support new themes and face new challenges, such as the Education of Ethnic-Racial Relations. The text results from the author's reflections, before, during and after participating in the conversation circle “Who's afraid of a black school library?” which was part of the III Symposium on Ethical-Political Practices in Librarianship, organized by the Department of Librarianship at the University of the State of Santa Catarina.
