Abstract

This research work has discussed the potentialities of contemporary libraries while cultural equipment, aiming at presenting actions that libraries have developed to reframing themselves and inspiring their communities. It was a study of qualitative approach developed in a theoretical scope, based on literature review of Library and Information Science areas. A brief overview of the libraries history has provided three perspectives: the collections preservation and conservation perspective: the information access, dissemination and mediation of information perspective and the content building perspective. A bibliographical survey of authors and official institutions such as the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), that problematizes the role of libraries in actuality has been carried out. Such compilation set up the creation of a non-exhaustive list of libraries that expanded the scope of their usual function of data organization serving as inspiration to libraries activities in contemporary times. This study concluded that, regardless of their historical circumstances, libraries have always linked their activities to the users communities and the most urging necessities during that time. It was noticed that the libraries have not exempted themselves from their preservational and organizational functions; but have been widening their role in not only making libraries to communities, but from communities.
