Abstract
It addresses views and concepts on collection development policy and the principles of collections, and highlights and explores new trends that contribute to the advancement and balanced growth of the collection in a public library. It has the objective of evidencing the management of collections in a public library, listing its processes and the relevance of the policy of formation and development of collections. It was structured based on a bibliographic and exploratory research and a qualitative design. It concludes that for a collection to be fully developed, a periodic evaluation is necessary and for this, it is necessary to elaborate a Collection Development Policy. It is also necessary that this activity be a continuous and evolutionary process that focuses on the informational needs of the user community.
